DLWE v Western 3 – Away (Match Report) 24th Oct 2012

October 25, 2012 2 comments

Once again my late arrival meant that I missed Ben’s match (poor commitment I know!). Richard said Ben played well and won 3-0, as did Sean. Western’s No.1 (Steve) said he was a great No.5 to have and his opponent said he was too strong, so when I asked Ben how he played I was thinking he’d be full of himself. Instead all I got was “I was rubbish”. “Well,” I said “I hope play rubbish and win 3-0 like you!” (I didn’t though I was fabulous!…….. In my own lunchtime!!). So a good 15-10  15-5  17-15 to kick the evening off against John Millar at No.5 (Ben spent the rest of the evening texting).

I did see Captain Cantlay’s match though and he was playing a blinder. 15-9 in the 1st was followed by a great come back from 6-12 down to win a lung-busting 2nd game 15-13. “Hit straight,” was the advise “and even when you get tired of hitting straight and think that he (Hamish Foster their No.3) must be covering the straight he isn’t; so hit more straight.” Unfortunately Rich was of the opinion that Hamish would get bored of volleying his cross court drives away and so he didn’t change until 10-6 down in the 3rd (despite Sean and I telling him between every game). But digging deep Captain C straightened up and 6-10 down was soon 12-10 up. Enough of the tactics for Rich and just boom it any old place. Fortunately at 15-15 Rich found couple of good boasts to take the game 17-15 and the match 3-0 (MOTM to Captain Cantlay for sheer effort; and for winning the game without the use of a drop shot!).

DLWE v Gryffe 2 – Away (Match Report) 3rd Oct 2012

A trip to Houston tonight and a match up v Strathgryffe 2 – and when I saw Lee Frazer and Garry McIlree at 1 & 2 I thought the 1st team must be strong (and surely that also meant that Ross Lawrie would be playing at 3 in the 2nd team!). I arrived late (I was trying a new route via Foxbar and got hopelessly lost) so missed the No.5 string match. The two youngsters, Ben (Mazzucco) and Alex Ward were battling it out and Ben managed to bring the match home 3-0 for us; but not before a really tough 18-16 first game. All who watched told me that both players played really well.

DLWE v Newlands 3 – Away (Match Report) 26th Sept 2012

Wednesday 26th September 2012 – 1st Team

1st game of the season! Fabulous! And at Newlands where there were 40 players and a great atmosphere.

Newlands 3rd team were our opponents and first up was our very own Captain Cantlay v John Rae. John had his intimidating Scotland t-shirt on, but Rich must have just though he was just one of the Tartan Army as he tried to start a sing along and buy him a pint!

West Squash Knockout Cup Final ‘A’ Event – DLWE 1 v Newlands 1

September 20, 2012 2 comments

Well, well, well! If you’d have told me THAT was going to be the result before the match, I’d have bitten your arm off.

We were up against the West 1st Division Champions and quite frankly expecting to get a humping. The format for the Final of the ‘Knockout Cup’ is to play 3 games – up to 15 – with a 4 man team (so if the match is a 2-2 draw every game counts and it goes to count-back.

First up was Rich (Cantlay) at No.3 and he was up against a very good player in Paul Sweeney.

West Squash AGM Asks All Member Clubs to Affiliate to ‘Scottish Squash’

In a historic AGM last night the West of Scotland Squash Clubs voted to make affiliation to Scottish Squash compulsory to all its members (just 5 West clubs affiliate at present).

With a majority of 80% of the votes ‘for’ the motion (50 votes to 13) this new proposal will soon be taken to the Scottish Squash AGM to ratify the new membership proposal, before this new deal is finalised.

The same motion, at a West Squash EGM three years ago failed, but only by the narrowest of margins; leading one pro-voter to comment that “We hadn’t lost the vote we were just 0-1 down in the match!”.

Last nights debate was reported to be a ‘lively affair’ with those opposing the motion putting their view in the strongest terms and warning that smaller clubs could go out of business if they are made to find more money (as happened 15+ years ago when West Squash took the requirement of compulsory affiliation out of their constitution).

However those supporting the motion didn’t think that this would happen; and the out-going West President (Henry Reid) was confident that both West and Scottish Squash could work with individual clubs to help them through any difficulties.

(Currently Newlands, David Lloyd Renfrew, Western, Strathgryffe and Nunholm in Dumfries are the five West clubs that choose to affiliate).

Harrow’s Peter O’Hara Wins The 2009/10 West Closed

Peter O’Hara (Newlands) won The 2009/10 West Closed Title at SSRC this weekend by beating Owen Hadden (Giffnock) in the final on Sunday. The match was 3-0 to Peter and although he always seemed to be in charge of proceedings Owen did make life tough for him by getting a couple of good leads in the individual games, especially the 2nd.

However when he was under pressure Pistol Pete always seemed to find another nic, which left Owen wondering what he had to do to keep the pressure on. Another impressive West Closed win for Peter and his 11th Title. (pic left Peter O’Harrow!!) To see all results click here

In the ‘B’ event Norman Patterson (Wishaw) came back from 2-0 down to beat Ashley Stevenson (David Lloyd West End) in an epic 5 games (results here) and Kieran O’Neill (Whitecraigs Rugby) won the ‘C’ event final 3-1 (results here) against Maggy Dick (from SSRC).
