DLWE v Hamilton – Home (Match Report) 4th December 2013

PaulHannahLogoWell Hamilton are in 3rd place in Division 1 so I was wondering where the points were going to come from this week.

An early start saw Sara and I go on first and I didn’t see much of Sara’s match (v Colin McGeady at No.5), apart from one enormous rally where both players were getting everything back and playing great squash (the mis-match in the physical size of both players was amusing to see and if we took a photo of them I’m not sure they’d get both in the same shot!). However Colin won the tie 3-0 and seemed to be in control with his great reach and pace on the ball. Sara was disappointed at her own performance but everyone else felt the opposite and was quite impressed with her tenacity and court speed!!

I was on at the same time as Sara and was fully expecting to be out-run at number two by Kenny Boyle and in the opening exchanges I was. However as the match unfolded I managed to sneak a few cheap points and a few great length shots and then, what do you know, I sneaked the 1st game! Kenny turned the power on in the 2nd and won easily, but I was now more confident (we even got a marker at this point! Not that we used him much; we just made our own decisions and completely ignored Doug, much to his amusement. In fact when Kenny asked for a let in the 3rd Doug just said ‘Well what do you guys think?’).

DLWE v Western 2 – Home (Match Report) 30th October 2013

November 4, 2013 1 comment

westsquashsitelogo1Sorry this report is late but I was away on business then had the RASTA racketball tournament to organise (and play) on Saturday – all that and the Squash on telly to watch, so it’s all been a bit hectic. Anyway last Wednesday saw us match up against Western 2, who are just one place below us in the 1st Division. In fact they (and we) are the division’s strongest teams as we’re holding the rest up!

I arranged a 6.30pm start for me at No: 2 and also for the number 5s, so I was amused, but not surprised, to see that the first pairing to arrive at 6.45pm were the number 4s! Typical!

We did start early though and I played David Kelly first up. Dave is looking like he used to 15 years ago, ‘lean and mean’ and moving around the court really well. Fortunately for me I’m also moving a bit better these days (at 2.5 stone lighter) and I was able to keep him chasing and won quite a few rallies……………….

Ramy & Laura Win British Open 2013 Titles

BritishOpen2013_40JUBILANT scenes were witnessed at Hull’s KC Stadium at the weekend for the second time in two months as a English player won the British Open women’s final for the first time since 1991.

Preston-based world number two Laura Massaro defied the odds to beat favourite Malaysian Nicol David 3-1 (11/4, 3/11, 12/10, 11/7) in the most tensely contested match of the tournament.

An emotional Ramy Ashour became the first Egyptian winner of the British Open since 1966 after he claimed the title at BritishOpenWinners2013_41his second attempt.

It wasn’t plain sailing for the world number one who was troubled by Frenchman Gregory Gaultier, a previous British Open champion himself who called on that experience, but couldn’t beat Ashour who won 3-1

Scotland Reach Semi-finals in the European Team Champs

It was a fantastic result for Scotland’s Mens team as they reached the Semi-finals in the European Team Championships at the weekend and finished 4th in Europe.

The team was Alan Clyne, Greg Lobban, Doug Kempsell, Chris Small, Stuart Crawford and Kevin Moran and this is the second year in a row that the team has place 4th in Europe, which is a wonderful achievement.

The 2013 Scottish Junior Inter-Regional Teams

2013 Inter-regional TeamsWest win 4 of the 5 titles (Tayside & Fife take U19s)

West of Scotland Juniors stole the show with a flurry of gold medals, but were denied a all the titles by Tayside & Fife last weekend.

The first ever event at Scotland’s 2014 Commonwealth squash facility saw 108 players, representing the country’s best juniors, meeting at the new courts at the Scotstoun in Glasgow.

For Tayside & Fife, last year’s winners Elspeth Young, Craig Valente-Wallace and David Beaumont stepped up an age group and along with Calum Johnston and Rory Irwin denied the West a full winning streak again. The gold medal decider was against the West and after losing the first two matches, Tayside & Fife had to win the final two to win the title. David Beaumont & Elspeth Young stepped up to the challenge and took both matches 3-0.

David Ward, Chairman of SSRC (the oldest members squash club in Scotland), presented the prizes at what is hoped to be the first of many events at the Scotstoun facility.

Scottish Racketball Open 2013 – Results

SORC_2013_Open_Final_ResultsThe ‘2013 Scottish Racketball Open’ took place at Dumfries this weekend and there was another excellent turnout including new players coming up from south of the border.

The Open was won by Nick Bond of ‘The Chapel Allerton Club’ in Leeds and his team-mate John Round also made it to the final.

Other winners came from as far north as Kirkwall and as far south as Cheshire, showing how Racketball is spreading around Scotland and the North of England.

Many thanks to Dumfries Squash & Racketball Club (!) for hosting the competition and especially Keith Gristwood for not only organising everything, but also winning the Over 55s National Open Title.

Return of the YoungSTARS – 17th March 2013

IMG-20130317-00197The YoungSTARS returned to David Lloyd in the West End this weekend when we held a mini-tournament on Sunday.

The aim was to give all the players as many matches as possible in an afternoon, so two mini-leagues followed by a play off match, guaranteed each competitor a minimum of 5 matches (best of 3 – PAR 11) and judging by the effort and red faces I think they’ll all sleep well tonight.

Players from David Lloyd West End, The Glasgow Academy, Whitecraigs LT&SC and Whitecraigs Rugby Club all competed. Many thanks to John Kirby for organising the players and the tournament with me.

Peter O’Hara – Interview of the Man Who Won The 2013 Over 40s British Nationals

March 13, 2013 1 comment
Peter at Newlands before coaching

Peter at Newlands before coaching

I met Peter O’Hara at his home club Newlands, in Glasgow’s South side, to congratulate him on his 2013 British National Over 40 Title and ask him how he did it.

As always Peter just saw it as another match and was surprised at the number of people who have since congratulated him on his title.

Even at the championships in Manchester last month when the organisers told him all about the finals day (the announcements, the introduction to the crowd, the music as he walked out), Peter was reticent to get in the spotlight. Even the MC said “Peter, you just don’t get it do you? It’s The Finals Day of ‘The British Nationals’!”
