Spring Gala Ball – help the Food4Africa charity build a squash court in rural South Africa

February 24, 2012 Leave a comment

The Charity Food4Africa http://food4africauk.org/ (run by a certain Dawn Broadberry – never heard of her!) is joining with the Legends of Squash (Peter Nicol, Jonathon Power etc) to build a new squash court in rural South Africa for the local community.

Dawn (the Charity’s Director pictured left with Squash Legend Jonathon Power) says “People can associate with our charity if it relates to their lives so building a squash court along with our feeding projects, in association with the Legends of Squash seemed like a perfect idea.”

If anyone would like to donate directly they can at www.justgiving.com/legendslegacy or text SQUA04 and your amount (e.g SQUA04£10) to 70070. Alternatively if you’d like to get involved as a squash club then why not hold a fun tournament and if you raise over £500.00 for the charity then we’ll put your club’s name on the “Friends of the Court” board when it’s finished (let us know how you are helping and we can help publicise it and send you information on the charity – e-mail dawn@food4africa.org).

Dawn added “We’re also holding a Spring Gala Ball at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on March 17th and there will be ways to help directly with building the “Food Court” via our silent auction including a painting from local artist and squash player Emilio Fazzi a classic signed ‘Nouillan‘ photo of Peter Nicol (in action playing another squash legend Martin Heath – back in the day!) and more!”

If you’d like to come to the Charity Gala Event please contact dawn@food4africa.org or j.broadberry@virgin.net

DLR v Whitecraigs Rugby – Home (Match Report) 22nd February 2012

February 23, 2012 Leave a comment

Well Whitecraigs Rugby tonight and a match we really hoped to win, but they went away with the points.

All three courts were in use, so I didn’t see all the matches. First on was Jason (Lang) v Matt Anderson at No.4. This is one I didn’t see, but Jason won the 1st game, before Matt came back strongly to win the next three. All the games were 8s and 9s so a tough match, but one up to WC. (Cont’d below)

DLR v Hamilton – Home (Match Report) 15th February 2012

February 16, 2012 Leave a comment

So it was all arranged to start early at 6.30pm for the No.3 & 4. The 2 DLR Jason’s were ready and raring to go. At 7pm Hamilton’s No.2  Kenny Boyle was the first to turn up and went straight on.

I was told that Colin McMullan would play either our No.3 or 4 “whoever we wanted.” I thought this was a novel way of picking the order of your team! (cont’d below)

DLR v Strathgryffe – Away (Match Report) 8th February 2012

Tonight’s match had three coaches, the under 19s National Champion and the guy who just took a game off world No.2 James Wilstrop at the British Nationals …………… and a pirate – as the mighty Lloyds matched up against ‘The Gryffe’!

First on was Jason (Lang) v Garry McIlree at No.5. This was a tight match that went one way then the other. Jason took a tight 1st game, Garry a good 2nd, tie breaks in the 3rd and 4th went both ways – and so to the 5th!

British Nationals 2012

To say that Kevin Moran (David Lloyd Renfrew/Scotland) got a tough draw in the British National Championships is putting it mildly as he lined up against No.1 seed (and PSA World No.2) James Wilstrop.

But he fought through two qualifying rounds to get this match, so should have relished the opportunity to play the world’s best. Unfortunately James managed to beat Kev today, but Kev got a game before losing the tie 11-3  9-11  11-4  11-4 so he must have a number of positives to take from that match.

Stuart Crawford (Scotland’s ‘Assistant National Coach’) also fought his way through the qualifying rounds to meet the No.9 seed Robbie Temple in another tough 1st round draw. Again he wasn’t able to progress, as he lost his tie 3-0 (11-5  11-5  11-5).

Congrats to both players for making it through.

DLR v Giffnock – Away (Match Report) 1st February 2012

It was anyone’s game tonight against Giffnock!

First on at No.5 was Jason (Lang) against The Mugger (Graham McAinsh). A real tough ask of the youngster here, but Jase caught Graham cold and won the 1st game 11-6. However a bit of complacency set in at this point and I think he didn’t realise that the Mugger was only just warming the joints up, so the was duly mugged in the 2nd and the 3rd games. Graham looked like he was cruising to victory at this point and Jason was wondering what had gone wrong. But of course nothing had, the momentum had just shifted; and it needed shifting back, and fast! …………..
