DLWE v Western 3 – Home (Match Report) 23rd January 2013

westsquashsitelogo1Well that was an early one tonight! We started v Western 3 at 6pm and all had a really early night – must do that more often!

Captain Cantlay had to get away early so arranged his match v Hamish Foster early doors at No.2. The pair had played each other in the first half and Richard had won the tussle, so he was favourite and I’d say that overall he played better this time round. Rich dominated the 1st game and although Hamish played much better in the 2nd, Rich did just about enough and managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. However he would have to hit a much better length to dominate the next game. He did this in the 3rd game and won 15-9 to take the tie 3-0. Another good performance from Rich and having beaten Sean twice in friendlies recently he thoroughly deserved his new No.2 team position.

South African Knght’s v West Select Match @ Newlands (Jan 2013)

January 23, 2013 2 comments

KnightsSorry for this late report on the South African Knights match v the West Select recently.

The match was played at Newlands and first up for the West was Mark Ford (Newlands) at No.2 v Craig Stephens. The 1st was a real game of two halves with Craig up 9-4 and Mark performing miracles to come back and force a tie break at 10-10. Mark then had another game ball against him (the 5th one) at 11-10, but eventually won 13-11. I was amazed at the come-back and the quality of squash Mark played against a player who looked very useful indeed.

Edinburgh Open 25th-27th January (BPSA Event)

2013 ESC OpenWant to see some great squash this weekend? Well get yourself along to Edinburgh Sports Club and watch some of the best players in the World.

Daryl Selby and Tom Richards head the seedings for the men’s draw. They are World Ranked 11 & 13 respectively so they will be tough to beat, but ex-winner Adrian Grant (seeded 3/4 and World Ranked 17, now playing with Harrow rackets) will be looking to upset the seedings and retake his crown.

There will also be some top Scottish players there to enjoy the home support. Including ‘Team Harrow’ (!) Greg Lobban (world Ranked 105), Dougie Kempsell and  Stuart Crawford, but also Kevin Moran and many others. To see the Full Draw click here

The Women’s even has also got some great players in Emily Whitlock and Lauren Selby (seeded 1 & 2), but home interest will be spearheaded by Frania Gillen-Buchert.

DLWE v Giffnock – Away (Match Report) 16th January 2013

westsquashsitelogo1

There were 3 Giffnock teams playing on only 2 courts tonight, so I steeled myself for a midnight finish as we lined up against their 3rd team. Fortunately team 1 were playing team 2 so that helped!

When I arrived David (Ritchie) was already on against Andy Penman at No.5, in a 6.30pm arranged match. Dave was 1-0 down, but when I joined it in the 2nd game I wasn’t sure what the problem was. David was dominating the game and was hitting a really good length, which Andy was either having to go and retrieve a lot or he was taking a chance and hitting too many down. Dave was moving to the front well as well. I thought this could be a good chance for us. It was! Davie won the 2nd and continued on in much the same vein for the rest of the match. Good 3-1 performance from our new No.5.

DLWE v Strathgryffe – Home (Match Report) 9th January 2013

westsquashsitelogo1The first west Team match of 2013 and it’s already the 2nd fixture of the 2nd half!? Eh??

Great to see the Strathgryffe 2nd team lads make the trip to the north side to see us. First on were Ben (Mazzucco) v Alex Ward and Richard (Cantlay) v David Archibald. I marked captain Cantlay’s match so missed Ben’s game. Rich dominated his match and played some good squash; in fact Sean and I both agree that Rich is actually turning himself into a squash player these days! He was controlling the rallies and had David either very short with a quick hard punch to the front, or played a good deep length (and the drops were good as well). David was very quick and fit, but was just handing the initiative back to Richard most of the time. A good 3-0 win for Captain C.

Live Squash On Sky Sports 3 This Saturday & Sunday – ATCO World Series Finals

World Series Finals 2013 Do you remember watching live squash (for the first time) this time last year when Amr Shabana and Greg Gaultier had ‘that match’?

Can they can top that performance this year?? Well the programme starts at 6pm on Sky Sports 3 on Saturday for the semi-finals and 4pm on Sunday for the finals and I’ll be glued to it.

The World Series field is made up of the top eight performers of the 2012 men’s and women’s World Series events. The format is based on two pools of four players, who must play each other before progressing to Saturday’s semi-finals.

From the last four onwards the tournament moves into a knockout format, with the champions crowned on Sunday (click here if you’d like to see the details of the tournament)
