Hello Jason

DLWE v Newlands 2 – Home (Match Report) 26th September 2013

September 26, 2013 Leave a comment

westsquashsitelogo1So another new season begins and a tough start for us, as one of the newly promoted teams, to face up against Newlands’ second team. But then that’s what Division 1 squash is all about, so we’ll just have to get used to it.
First on tonight for us was Sean (Norris) against James Singh at No:3 – now I’ve seen Sean play better than this, but to be fair I’m not sure it would have made much difference tonight. James moved beautifully around the court, despite a (slightly) injured knee and he was always in charge of this match. This was a typical first game of the season match from Sean and I’m sure he will tighten up and get quicker. So 3-0 to Newlands and we were still looking for our first point of the season.

Next on at number 4 was David (Craig) against Stewart Brumpton. Now this game had a 5 setter written all over it, as it was the battle of the chasers.

West K.O. Cup v SSRC (away) 4th Sept 2013

September 5, 2013 1 comment

westsquashsitelogo1SSRC away tonight and when I arrived I saw John Dunlop (CEO of Scottish Squash) and wondered if he was here to do offer me an international call up!?!?! Unfortunately not!

First on was Jason Grinton v Chris Farrell and Kev Cameron v Steve Carlin at No.3 & 4 respectively. I marked the first of these two and Chris was always in control of this one. He played short really well he caught Jason with this tactic time after time. Jason was always on the back foot because of this and Chris managed to take the game 3-0. A good performance non-the-less by Jase.

I missed most of Kev’s game v Steve C, but I certainly heard it. The shouts of “What are you talking about referee!” and “What the ****!” were easily audible.

KO Cup v Giffnock Young Guns 28th August 2013

The Knockout Cup is a great way to ease yourself into a brand new season – especially as this season will see the best in the Commonwealth Come to our door in 2014.

Glasgow City-20130828-00765And talking about the Commonwealth Games, a team from Scotstoun (the new squash venue for The Games) were playing their first ever match against our 4th team. It’s great to see a brand new team join the leagues and the only thing that worried them was that they weren’t 100% sure on the scoring. No matter I thought our No.2 (Sean) has been playing for years and he’s got no idea how to score either! (Pic left is of the Scotstoun team). And to see the 4th team report click here.

In the meantime, the Giffnock Young Gunners came visiting to play out 1st team and with an average age of about 16 they would obviously be easy pickings for us and we’d show them how squash should be really be played. Right?

The 2013 Scottish Junior Inter-Regional Teams

2013 Inter-regional TeamsWest win 4 of the 5 titles (Tayside & Fife take U19s)

West of Scotland Juniors stole the show with a flurry of gold medals, but were denied a all the titles by Tayside & Fife last weekend.

The first ever event at Scotland’s 2014 Commonwealth squash facility saw 108 players, representing the country’s best juniors, meeting at the new courts at the Scotstoun in Glasgow.

For Tayside & Fife, last year’s winners Elspeth Young, Craig Valente-Wallace and David Beaumont stepped up an age group and along with Calum Johnston and Rory Irwin denied the West a full winning streak again. The gold medal decider was against the West and after losing the first two matches, Tayside & Fife had to win the final two to win the title. David Beaumont & Elspeth Young stepped up to the challenge and took both matches 3-0.

David Ward, Chairman of SSRC (the oldest members squash club in Scotland), presented the prizes at what is hoped to be the first of many events at the Scotstoun facility.

Return of the YoungSTARS – 17th March 2013

IMG-20130317-00197The YoungSTARS returned to David Lloyd in the West End this weekend when we held a mini-tournament on Sunday.

The aim was to give all the players as many matches as possible in an afternoon, so two mini-leagues followed by a play off match, guaranteed each competitor a minimum of 5 matches (best of 3 – PAR 11) and judging by the effort and red faces I think they’ll all sleep well tonight.

Players from David Lloyd West End, The Glasgow Academy, Whitecraigs LT&SC and Whitecraigs Rugby Club all competed. Many thanks to John Kirby for organising the players and the tournament with me.

DLWE v Dumfries & Hamilton – Away (Match Report) 6th March 2013

westsquashsitelogo1Well we played ‘Dumfries & Hamilton Squash Club’ last night (D&H) in the penultimate game of the season. We’re only a handful of points behind Glasgow Uni, so the team was all geared up for a good match and hoping to keep the pressure on the Uni in case they slipped up with their match against Newlands. So with the same team as the 1st half we were confident.

Ben (Mazzucco) was on first against D&H’s Keith Gristwood. Keith was picking up his 4th cap for the D&H 2nd team tonight and he started positively by winning the 1st game 15-8, but Ben came right back at him in the 2nd to level things up. Unfortunately Ben was carrying an injury and was finding it harder and harder to push-off. Then when he went into one of his ridiculous lunging splits, he jarred his ankle, fell over and it was all over. Ben retired after the end of the game and so D&H got the first win on the board. Keith had to make the long trip home so we didn’t see him again.

DLWE v Cameron House – Away (Match Report) 27th February 2013

February 28, 2013 Leave a comment

westsquashsitelogo1Sean phoned me earlier on in the day to discuss the match and as we were chatting about who we may be playing Sean tried to describe his likely opponent. “Will I be playing that really tall guy?”

“Well,” I replied “that doesn’t really narrow it down Sean! In fact you say that every week “I played that tall guy, I played that tall guy.”

At 6pm I got a message that Cameron House could only get 4 players out, so I had to give our new No.5 (JT) the bad news and the rest of us headed to Loch Lomond. Sean took the road high over the Erskine Bridge and I took the lower road under the Clyde Tunnel and do you know what? Sean was at the banks of Loch Lomond before me!

February 19, 2013 Leave a comment

2013 Nationals Peter O'Hara - winner over 40s D7-1 333Many Congratulations to Peter O’Hara on becoming Over 40s British National Champion for 2013.

He took the title 3-1 in just 29 minutes when he beat Jamie Goodrich (from Norfolk) in the final.

The Championships were held at Manchester’s Sportscity last week and Peter led the Scottish charge with what looks like a comfortable win (with all but one games not going over 29 minutes).

Great win for a legend of West Squash – well played again Peter (O’Harrow!)
