“Squash Was Made for the Olympics” says Jonathon Power
According to a brochure created by World Squash 2020, a campaign that sought inclusion for squash at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, squash is played on over 50,000 courts by men and women in 185 countries.
“There’s no reason squash shouldn’t be included in the Olympics.” says ex-world No.1 Jonathon Power. “The sport is ideal for the Olympics, it was made for the Olympics.”
It is important to note that squash has no quarrel with wrestling, which beat out squash along with a joint bid from softball and baseball for inclusion in the 2020 Games, though the general consensus is that wrestling should never have lost its spot in the first place.
“Wrestling is the best sport in the Olympics, period,” says Power. “It’s the original sport, it’s the toughest sport.”
Sam Cornett the Canadian Ladies No.1 (pic above with Jonathon) says “I love the fact that it’s often been compared to chess. You’re watching squash and you can see the strategy unfold based on each player, it’s so different for every player.”
Asked about any possible arguments against the inclusion of squash in the Olympics, Cornett can only come up with one, and it’s not a strong one.
“ I’ve heard people say it’s boring,” she says. “My response to that is to try and understand the sport more. If I watch hockey and I don’t know the rules, you don’t really understand and you’re not really involved in the game. Learn the rules, then you’ll understand. Try the sport, and you’ll understand the excitement.”

Alan Clyne wins New Zealand International Squash Classic
Alan Clyne clinched the New Zealand International Squash Classic title – but he had to survive one of the longest matches of his career to see off local hero Martin Knight in the final of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 event.
“In front of a large crowd and being ‘streamed’ live around the world, Harrow’s Alan Clyne (pictured above) showed why he is number 33 in the world and one of the fittest players on tour, in an epic five-game victory,” said event spokesman Michael Williams.
Alan got off to a fast start, winning the 1st & a tie break 2nd game. However the New Zealand champion fought back to draw level and force the match into a decider. “The match had turned into a battle of attrition and had been going 75 minutes by the start of the fifth,”
Alan got off to a good start and at 2-0 up the next rally ultimately decided the match as both players traded blows up and down the backhand wall in a rally that seemed to last forever. It finally came to an end when Martin Knight lost patience and went for a shot from the back of the court that resulted in a tin.
Alan extended his lead to 6-1 before closing out the match 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, 8-11, 11-6 after 91 minutes to collect the 5th Tour title of his career.
Many congratulations Alan.

West K.O. Cup v SSRC (away) 4th Sept 2013
SSRC away tonight and when I arrived I saw John Dunlop (CEO of Scottish Squash) and wondered if he was here to do offer me an international call up!?!?! Unfortunately not!
First on was Jason Grinton v Chris Farrell and Kev Cameron v Steve Carlin at No.3 & 4 respectively. I marked the first of these two and Chris was always in control of this one. He played short really well he caught Jason with this tactic time after time. Jason was always on the back foot because of this and Chris managed to take the game 3-0. A good performance non-the-less by Jase.
I missed most of Kev’s game v Steve C, but I certainly heard it. The shouts of “What are you talking about referee!” and “What the ****!” were easily audible.
KO Cup v Giffnock Young Guns 28th August 2013
The Knockout Cup is a great way to ease yourself into a brand new season – especially as this season will see the best in the Commonwealth Come to our door in 2014.
And talking about the Commonwealth Games, a team from Scotstoun (the new squash venue for The Games) were playing their first ever match against our 4th team. It’s great to see a brand new team join the leagues and the only thing that worried them was that they weren’t 100% sure on the scoring. No matter I thought our No.2 (Sean) has been playing for years and he’s got no idea how to score either! (Pic left is of the Scotstoun team). And to see the 4th team report click here.
In the meantime, the Giffnock Young Gunners came visiting to play out 1st team and with an average age of about 16 they would obviously be easy pickings for us and we’d show them how squash should be really be played. Right?
