US Squash Open – PSA $115K & WISPA $60K

Well a few shocks in the US Open as  Amr Shabana wins the PSA Title and Laura Massaro wins the WISPA Title.

The WISPA event saw Harrow’s Kasey Brown line up against Laura Massaro. Kasey had an amazing run to the final, beating Nicol David (World No.1) in the quarter final and Laura had beaten Jenny Duncalf (World No.2) in her semi-final, so both players were in sparkling form.

But it was Laura (Eng) who managed to pick up the title winning the final after coming from 0-1 down against the Aussie to win 3-1 in 56mins.

In the PSA event Amr Shabana also upset the seedings to win his 2nd US Open title. Nick Matthews (PSA No.1) was his opponent and although Nick was suffering from a leg injury he was still very much in with a chance. At 8-9 in the 1st game the video ref overturned a let decision (to a ‘no-let’) to give Amr game ball and he soon finished the game off. Nick got the match back to 1-1, but Amr then ran away with the last two games to secure the title 3-1. PSA Draw  & WISPA Draws here

The US open has kicked off already and although Scotland’s Alan Clyne (Harrow) came through qualifying he got a tough 1st round draw against Hisham Ashour. Alan had won their previous encounter, but the world No.15 was out for revenge and he managed to beat Alan 3-1 on Friday night.

But Alan is still climbing the World Rankings and is currently at a career high of No.34

    Many congratulations Alan.

The Quarter Finals of the tournament are on today and No.1 Nick Matthew looks to have an easier draw with the absence of Ramy Ashour, but will he be able to over come the challenge from the best of the rest?

The Women started their tournament last night and it is tough to see past Nicol David for the winner in this one, although if anyone can do it my money’s on Jenny Duncalf.

Having seen Shabana play a few matches before the final it wasn’t a huge shock he beat Nick (sic). He moves around the court so well, surely the most graceful mover in the game, and his style is Uber-relaxed. Nick did look very tired though, a rare low intensity performance from him.
The ladies result was more of a shock! Great win for Kasey Brown against Nicol David on the way to the final.
Great coverage of the tournament on PSA Live TV although the commentary is very pro-English. Can they not at least try to disguise their bias?!?
