Tournament of Champions 2014
Amr Shabana is the 2014 New York ‘Tournament of Champions’ winner.
In an amazing run he beat Gregory Gaultier (No.1 seed) in the Final at Grand Central Station 3-0 (11-4 13-11 11-8) to claim his 3rd ToC title – and the last one was 8 years ago!
And on the way he beat the seeds 2 & 4 in Nick Matthew and James Wilstrop to seal an amazing win for the No.7 seed.
Nicol David beat Laura Massaro in the women’s W.S.A. final to take her 1st ToC championship and she was delighted to do it saying “I get goose bumps every time I walk into Grand Central.”
It’s great to see 2 legends of the game on the top of their games.

DLWE v Newlands 1 – Home (Match Report) 15th January 2014
Newlands again this week and this time the Newlands Foreign Legion 1st team came calling! And we were looking to do better than the 18-2 result from the 1st half.
At No.5 Sara (McDonald) was on first against Malky Watt (we’d strengthened the team this week by dropping Richard!). Malky was playing as well as ever and getting everything back (as ever) so this was always going to be a tough one for Sara. Malky took the 1st game, but then Sara got a really good lead in the 2nd game and managed to hold on to win this one. However Malky started to ramp up the pace & pressure and won the next two to win 3-1 (but already we’d gotten a massive 1 point on the board!). So what could the rest of the team do to build on that; was the question? Well nothing – was the answer!
Dave (Craig) went on at the same time against Angus Woodward at No.4 and I didn’t see this one as I was marking, but it seems that the big man was given a torrid time of it by Angus who dominated the game from the start. I saw the last game and it was evident that Big Dave just wasn’t able to get into his rhythm and so lost the 3rd and the match.
Doug (Macmillan) was on against Scotland’s No.2 Greg Lobban. Well if the rest of us were up against it, it was x10 for Dougie against the Harrow man who is No.82 in the World Rankings by the way!

2013 U.S.Open in Philly
Greg and Nicol take the U.S. Open titles in Philly!
The finals on Friday night saw some great squash with a really exciting 3-2 in the W.S.A. women’s event and a master class in the P.S.A. men’s event.
http://www.usopensquash.com says:
What a women’s final to mark the first ever World series event to offer equal prize money for the women and the men!
It was a meeting of the world No. 1 and world No. 2 and Nicol David retained her U.S. Open title with a thrilling five-game victory over Laura Massaro—eighty-four minutes of captivating play that could have been choreographed to say to to the men’s finalists “follow that if you can!”
What followed was a masterful performance from Gregory Gaultier as the French top seed added to his U.S. Open title of 2006 with a straight games win over Nick Matthew, the third seed and 2007 champion.
Picture left shows Harrow’s James Simpson take on the Number 2 seed James Wilstrop in the 1st round.

Ramy & Laura Win British Open 2013 Titles
JUBILANT scenes were witnessed at Hull’s KC Stadium at the weekend for the second time in two months as a English player won the British Open women’s final for the first time since 1991.
Preston-based world number two Laura Massaro defied the odds to beat favourite Malaysian Nicol David 3-1 (11/4, 3/11, 12/10, 11/7) in the most tensely contested match of the tournament.
An emotional Ramy Ashour became the first Egyptian winner of the British Open since 1966 after he claimed the title at
his second attempt.
It wasn’t plain sailing for the world number one who was troubled by Frenchman Gregory Gaultier, a previous British Open champion himself who called on that experience, but couldn’t beat Ashour who won 3-1

The top 2 seeds in the Men’s Draw are Ramy Ashour (No.1) and Nick Matthew (No.2 and defending champion) – and they could meet for a showdown on Sunday. However James Willstrop (No.3), Greg Gaultier (No.4 seed) will no doubt have something to say about that!
In the Women’s Event it’s once again hard to see past Nicol David to retain her title, but the big challenge may come from Laura Massaro (seeded No.2)
