Harrow’s Alan Clyne at the British Nationals

February 11, 2010 Leave a comment

Below is a report from the Squash Site of Alan Clyne’s epic performance against the World ranked No#12 Alistair Walker in the last 16 of the British Nationals in Manchester. Congratulations Alan – great match and also very unlucky at the end.

Alister Walker  did more than drop a single game against speedy Scot Alan Clyne, the fifth seed was taken to the wire, finally winning in five in 84 minutes, the longest match of the tournament so far.
Clyne took the first on extra points but Walker struck back to take the lead and all looked well. But Clyne is fast, fit and never stops, as many of his opponents will testify, and he took it to a decider.
Walker quickly established control, leading 3/1 then 6/2 then 8/2 with two glued dropshots. All over you thought, but back came Clyne, aided by Walker hitting the ball back to himself three times and now it was 8/7.

Harrow 1-2-3 in the Scottish Nationals

The 2010 Scottish Junior Nationals saw Harrow’s Kirsty Lobban (left) win the girls U15 age group and Gillian Crawford come 2nd in the girls U19 and Chris Leiper (right) added a 3rd place in the boys U17s to complete the Harrow 1-2-3.

David Lloyd Renfrew’s Morgan Maguire won the girls Under 17s and there was also an all David Lloyd semi-final in the boys U15s between Ben Mazzucco (from the Glasgow West End Club) who was just piped by the eventual U13 winner Jason Lang (from the Renfrew Club).

And the future is looking bright for the West as  another two players took the honours in the U13s with Harry Anderson of Whitecraigs RFC winning his first national title and Adam Reid from Whitecraigs LTC/Newlands winning the U11s.

John Dale Passes Away

I’ve just heard the very sad news that former PSA World No.#84 John Dale has passed away (he lost a long battle against cancer last Thursday at the very young age of 33).

John was from the North East of England and used to come up to play West of Scotland and National League in the 1990’s. He was a very nice guy and a great player and very well thought of by all who met him.

Edinburgh BSPA Tournament Results

January 31, 2010 1 comment

Adrian Grant and Vanessa Atkinson win the 2010 Edinburgh BSPA Tournament.

In an upset to the seedings Adrian’s opponent in the final was Saurav Ghosal World No.#29 (as he beat Daryl Selby World No.#13) and the Indian No.#1 made Adrian work very hard for the 3-1 victory in the final, which took an hour and 10 minutes.

Vanessa managed to win her final with a 3-0 victory over Nicollett Fernandes in just half an hour; after returning last Thursday just-in-time from New York (where her boyfriend James Wilstrop won the ‘Tournament of Champions’ title).

New York Tournament of Champions

January 28, 2010 5 comments

Well that was a bit of a turn up for the books!

James Willstrop is The New York Tournament of Champions Champion.

James beat the PSA World No.1 Ramy Ashor 3-1 (12-10  11-5  9-11 11-3) to secure his first ever New York win.

And that’s not the only World No.1 he had to beat. On his journey to the final he had to overcome Amr Shabana and Karim Dawwish, both of who have been at the top of the Sport last year and in Amr’s case for some considerable time before that. Which is why James ranks winning the 2010 Tournament of Champions as the best win of his career.
