2012 US Open
The World No.1 & 2 crashed out in the semi-finals of the men’s US Open to leave the door open for either Ramy or Gregory G to take the 2012 title.
Ramy Ashour beat Nick Matthew 3-1 and Gregory Gaultier beat James Willstrop 3-0 in the semi-finals. And with tough match after tough match taking its toll on the top seeds, it showed that when you’re not 100% against this quality of opposition they can take full advantage with wonderful shot play.
The final itself was dominated by Ramy, winning his 1st US Open title in three straight games, as the Frenchman had no answer to his speed and control (11-4 11-9 11-9).
In the WISPA event Nicol David took the title from the young pretender Raneem El Weleily to win the her first US Open. In-so-doing she established a new record of titles by winning her 63rd final (beating Sarah Fitz Gerald’s previous record).
The 2012 US Open has hit the semi-final stage and the men’s event is looking very exciting with Nick Matthew against Ramy Ashour in the bottom half; both coming through their quarter finals in long 5 set matches (Nick’s lasting over 1½ hours!)
The bottom half of the draw sees a repeat of the last PSA tournament with World No.1 James Willstrop against Gregory Gaultier (The last time they played the game was a 3-2 1½ hour barnstormer!)
The $115K prize fund in the PSA event (and World Ranking points) is the big prize (to see the Draw click here)
In the Women’s draw No.1 Nicol David, No.2 Raneem El Weleily & No.3 Laura Massaro are all through to tonight’s semi-finals. They are joined by Joelle King a qualifier from New Zealand who knocked out both the No.7 and No.3 seed to reach her semi-final. But she will really be up against it tonight as she plays Nicol David to get a place in the )$115K prize funded) US Open Final.
