David Lloyd Glasgow West End Championships

David Lloyd Glasgow West End Semi-Final – Well that was a great semi-final in the David Lloyd West End Championships last night as Richard Cantlay took on the young pretender Doug Macmillan. On paper I thought Richard was the favourite, but Doug had a good chance if he really performed.

Doug started well by taking the first exchanges by the scruff of the neck with a 3 points to nil lead which he then extended to 8-4, but Richard dug like a mole on speed and got this back to 9-9 and then 13-10. Doug was not to be denied and he took his chances to level the game at 14-14 and then even took the next point! But Richard grabbed the shovel back and once again dug his way out of trouble to win the final 3 points and take the 1st game 17-15.

In the 2nd game Doug once again took control with a much deeper cross court length. He took a 6-4 lead, but once again Richard battled hard and got back to 9-9, but this time the hard work early on was taking its toll and Doug was able take the next few points and then hold onto this lead to win the 2nd 12-15. Now it was anyone’s game!

Richard came out with all guns blazing in the 3rd and controlled the early exchanges with some good drops and quick thinking; Doug did a lot of hard physical work at this stage just to stay in the game. At 10-6 up it looked like Richard was going to romp home, but no chance of that! Doug played really well to get the game back to 12-12 with some calculated risks and good attacking squash; proving the old adage that “attack is the best form of defence” – but just then there was a humongous rally and Richard took the next couple of points with some quick shots to take advantage of Doug’s tired legs – 3rd game to Richard 15-12.

The ref, Andrew McSherry, had to call both players a couple of times for the start of the 4th and eventually the two gladiators returned to the court. A great start for Doug again saw him 5-3 up, but another wonderful comeback saw Richard take the next 6 points. This, I reckon, was the decisive run because although it was still a very hard physical battle and pretty even after that the lead wasn’t surrendered. A very tired Richard Cantlay was first over the 3 game line at 15-9 in the 4th, and he was pretty glad to not have to take his chances in a 5th game!

It was a very good game to watch and both men can be proud of their part in a thoroughly entertaining match.
