Elshorbagy Is New World No.1
23-year-old Egyptian Mohamed Elshorbagy has climbed to the top of the PSA World Tour rankings, overtaking 31-year-old Frenchman Gregory Gaultier.
He becomes the fourth youngest player ever to become squash World No.1. Elshorbagy enters the record books behind only Pakistani legends Jahangir & Jansher Khan (who both topped the charts aged 18) and compatriot Ramy Ashour who became number one aged 22. His victory over Gaultier in the semi-finals of the 2014 Delaware Investments US Open and Nick Matthew’s defeat to four-time World Champion Amr Shabana in the other last four encounter means that he will sit on top the PSA charts for the first time in his career (when the latest rankings come out in November 1st)
Mohamed described it as a dream moment come true. “It feels unbelievable right now,”said Elshorbagy. “It’s been a dream to get to that spot and I can’t believe I’m there right now.”
Commonwealth Squash Round Up
Nick Matthew (England) and Nicol David (Malaysia) made history by becoming the first champions to retain their gold medals in the singles events – then India also claimed a place in squash history by securing the country’s first ever Games medal when Joshana Chinappa & Dipika Pallikal won the Women’s Doubles gold against the odds.
Veteran David Palmer rounded off the entire Games programme by clinching double gold for Australia after winning the Men’s & Mixed Doubles titles (with Cameron Pilley and Rachael Grinham, respectively).

Doubles Squash/Double Trouble/Double Vision! Get ready for a double helping of intense sporting action! Doubles Squash puts four players in an enclosed space and challenges them to show off their skills. Players don’t just have to keep one step ahead of their opponents; they have to work in perfect tandem with their partner; anticipating, reacting and perfectly positioning every shot. The court is over 2 metres wider than a Singles court and the players use every inch of it. They go up high, down low, and lunge in every direction as they hunt down points. Teamwork is everything and the action doesn’t let up, not even for a moment. In Doubles Squash, the pressure is shared, but so is the joy of victory.

This was the ‘match of the tournament’ but neither player went on to win the tournament! The 102 minute semi final was an amazing contest, but Gregory Gaultier took the title by beating Nick in the final.
