South African Knights v West Match @ Newlands Sat 8th January

Saturday night saw a great display of squash as a West Select side took on the South African Knights and it was good to see so many spectators come down and support the match.

cont’d below

Owen Hadden (No.4) and Mark Ford (No.3) kicked off proceedings and everything was going well, with both matches 1-0 to The West. However Mark’s opponent (Brett Van Rensburg) found several more gears and he really upped the tempo to overturn the deficit. Mark made a great effort in the 4th game and was 9-8 up, but Brett went on to win the game 12-10 and the tie 3-1 (11-1  7-11  9-11  10-12).

Owen was also pegged back in the 2nd game by his opponent JP.Brits and lost it 4-11, but this was just a temporary set-back and Owen took full advantage of J.P.’s tough match the night before to win the tie 3-1 with his infamous array of shots, volley and half volleys! (11-9  4-11  11-7  11-4). Owen wins man of the match for The West for a great victory against a full-time player.

Third on at No.2 was Iain Tennant against Alan McGuigan (whose parents come from Glasgow). Alan took a comfortable 1-0 lead as Iain just tightened up at some crucial points to find the tin a few too many times. The 2nd game saw Ian take a much more commanding 9-6 lead, but again a few too many tins gave Alan a chance to come back and win the game 10-12. However the next two games saw a magnificent fight back by Iain and he dominated the 3rd 11-8 and came back from 4-7 down to win the 4th 11-7 with some fantastic shots. Both players were very tired after this, but it was  still very even up to 4-4 in the 5th. but Iain seemed to cramp up at this point and Alan took full advantage to take the game 5-11 and the match (7-11  10-12  11-8  11-7  5-11). Great match to watch though.

Peter O’Hara was on last at No.1 against Justin Gouweloos and it was immediately obvious that Peter had not had as many tough matches in the past month (about 2) as Justin had (about 40 on this tour!) and this was probably the main difference between them. All the games were close in the middle, but in each Justin got a good run of points to win the match 3-0 (8-11  7-11  5-11).

Thanks to Dave Mathie and John Crawford for doing the ref’s duties and also to Newlands to hosting the match. Also a big thanks to West Squash who helped with accommodation and expenses for the Knights night.

So the Knights won the match 3-1 and we all retired to the bar for a curry and also to look through the last 10 year history of the Knight’s matches in the UK (the Knights carry this ‘squash tour bible’ on every trip and it’s great to see some of the old matches and names – including mine back as far as 2002! The older ‘squash tour bibles go back to 1961, but they are not allowed out of South Africa; and if the captain does not bring the current one home he’s not allowed back in the country!!).

It was great to see another Knights team come to Glasgow again (the last I saw of them they were teaching our guys a drinking game!) and we look forward to hosting them again in 2 years.

The famous touring South African Knights will be playing a ‘West Select’ team featuring Peter O’Hara, Mark Ford, Iain Tennent and Owen Hadden at Newlands on Saturday at 5.30pm.

The Knights have toured the UK every 2 years since 1961 and it’s an entirely player funded event. Normally an under 25′s team and this year it’s a 4 player squad.

One feature of the Knights Club is that it has produced many national and provincial players, and this can be attributed largely to the quality of the opposition encountered on tour, and the profound lessons learnt on court.

Venue : Newlands – entry is FOC
    Starts : 5.30, beers/socialising afterwards

Everyone is very welcome to come and watch some top quality squash.
