The British Doubles is on at Scotstoun in Glasgow this week and is providing some good practice for the Commonwealth Games.

The teams are made up from mainly Scotland and Wales and the round robin format means that the Men’s and Mixed doubles will get 4 matches each (the women’s doubles is a 3 match series).

Final matches will be on Thursday at 11.30am and anyone can come and watch for just £5 each.

My 2013 West Masters

December 10, 2013 Leave a comment

Another great West Masters and some fantastic Squash to see, from the winners Mark Ford, Peter Buchan, Mark James, Chris Holt, Robin Ridley, John Howie, Iain Ross, Vincent Taylor & Eunice Bond

Emilio Fazzi ably directed the tournament again this year (his last year in charge) and the two days ran as smoothly as ever.

I played the Over 40s tournament and initially found it strange playing the old ‘Hi-Ho’ system of scoring, but you soon get used to it again.

However it’s the camaraderie that is the focal point of the Masters squash for me. It’s great to return every time and still you know most people there and spend the 2 days not only playing some tough games, but renewing acquaintances and friendships.

Could do with it being over a week though – with rest days in-between!

The 2013 Scottish Junior Inter-Regional Teams

2013 Inter-regional TeamsWest win 4 of the 5 titles (Tayside & Fife take U19s)

West of Scotland Juniors stole the show with a flurry of gold medals, but were denied a all the titles by Tayside & Fife last weekend.

The first ever event at Scotland’s 2014 Commonwealth squash facility saw 108 players, representing the country’s best juniors, meeting at the new courts at the Scotstoun in Glasgow.

For Tayside & Fife, last year’s winners Elspeth Young, Craig Valente-Wallace and David Beaumont stepped up an age group and along with Calum Johnston and Rory Irwin denied the West a full winning streak again. The gold medal decider was against the West and after losing the first two matches, Tayside & Fife had to win the final two to win the title. David Beaumont & Elspeth Young stepped up to the challenge and took both matches 3-0.

David Ward, Chairman of SSRC (the oldest members squash club in Scotland), presented the prizes at what is hoped to be the first of many events at the Scotstoun facility.

Harrow Sponsored Katie Gregson-MacLeod – Scottish Under 13s Champ!

February 16, 2013 Leave a comment

Katie Gregson-MacLeod Feb 2013Harrow sponsored youngster Katie Gregson-MacLeod won a breakthrough Under-11/13 Scottish Junior Nationals in February 2011. This was a sign of very good things to come, as Aberdeen’s veteran Coach George Tierney recognised at the time.

Since then, coaching at Inverness Tennis & Squash Club from such masters as Garry McKay, Malcolm MacKay and Phil Williams has led to her game developing key strengths in touch and court-savviness. Now climbing the divisions in junior tournaments, Katie (at just 11 years old) has just won the Scottish Under-13 Title and she is now ranked No.1 Under 13 (& No.2 at Under 14!). She is very excited to be representing Scotland in the 5-Nations in Le Mans, France, in March.

Katie ranks her inspirations as World No.1 Nicol David and World No.2 Harrow’s Raneem El Weleily (not bad players to aspire to!)
