David Lloyd West End 2013 Championships – Finals Day
May the 4th saw the Finals Day at David Lloyd West End as three trophies were up for grabs including the ‘Open Title’, the ‘Plate’ and the ‘Super Plate’.
First on was the Super Plate final and this was won by Wendy McDougal as she beat Fraser Thomson 3-0 to win the tournament (having played the semi-final just an hour before – beating Cameron Gauhl in another tough match). The final was a good game to watch and after explaining the ‘turning rule’ to Fraser a much safer one!
Next on was the Plate Final and Sandro Mazzucco took on Alastair Baird. Al looked like he was cruising to a comfortable 3-0 victory, but Sandro sprung into life to wrestle the 3rd game back – spurred on by the crowd! The 4th also went to Sandro with some great rallies and now it was really exciting. However Al managed to compose himself in the 5th game, to sneak home 3-2, but it may not be long before this score line is reversed if Sandro continues to improve like he has this season.
Last on was the Open Final and it was a repeat of last years Championship as Doug Macmillan took on Richard Cantlay. In the 1st game both players looked nervous and…………………………….

The 2013 Scottish Junior Inter-Regional Teams
West win 4 of the 5 titles (Tayside & Fife take U19s)
West of Scotland Juniors stole the show with a flurry of gold medals, but were denied a all the titles by Tayside & Fife last weekend.
The first ever event at Scotland’s 2014 Commonwealth squash facility saw 108 players, representing the country’s best juniors, meeting at the new courts at the Scotstoun in Glasgow.
For Tayside & Fife, last year’s winners Elspeth Young, Craig Valente-Wallace and David Beaumont stepped up an age group and along with Calum Johnston and Rory Irwin denied the West a full winning streak again. The gold medal decider was against the West and after losing the first two matches, Tayside & Fife had to win the final two to win the title. David Beaumont & Elspeth Young stepped up to the challenge and took both matches 3-0.
David Ward, Chairman of SSRC (the oldest members squash club in Scotland), presented the prizes at what is hoped to be the first of many events at the Scotstoun facility.

David Lloyd West End Club Championships 2012/13
The 2012/13 David Lloyd West End Club Champs are reaching their climax this weekend and we already have our finalist.
Monday’s semi-final between Sean Norris (seeded No.2) and Richard Cantlay (seeded No.3) saw an upset as Richard beat Sean 3-0.
The second semi-final was last night between No.1 seed Doug Macmillan and No.4/5 seed David Craig. Dave had an excellent 3-2 win in the quarter finals against Ben Mazzucco, but this was a match too far as Doug powered through to the final on Saturday.
Saturday will also see the plate final and two other competitions. One involving players who lost the 2nd round (the Super Cup) and the other for 1st round runners-up in the Plate (the Super Plate) – so should be a feast of squash!

Whitecraigs LT&SC Club Champ 2013
Everingham’s clean up at Whitecraigs Club Champs!
The 2013 ‘Open’ and ‘Ladies’ Club Championships were won by husband and wife team Alex and Maurine Everingham this weekend.
Maurine won the Ladies Championships on Friday evening, by beating Sheila Reid in the deciding game of the 5 player round-robin and turned around last years result to reclaim her title.
Alex also reclaimed his title as he played Scot Morton in the Open Final on Saturday. Alex dominated the first two games and was well up (around 8-2) in the 3rd before Scott staged a remarkable come back. With the crowd demanding a 5-setter Scott dug in and Alex started to play with a lot more caution. This made the difference to the momentum of the match and Scott clinched the 3rd. Game on! The shift in fortune continued in the 4th game and when Scott got to 14-13 ‘game-ball’ it to looked like the 5th game was going to decide it.
But Alex had other ideas and after he got back to parity, he kept his concentration to win the tie break 16-14 and take this years Club Championship Title.
A really exciting game to watch and then dissect over a few pints!

Squash – Back the Bid for the 2020 Olympics
Andre Agassi, Kim Clijsters and Stefan Edberg have followed fellow tennis legend Roger Federer in backing Squashto be added to the Olympic Games programme in 2020 (to see pics of who’s backing the bid click here).
“Squash is absolutely one of the best/toughest sports,” said Agassi, the eight-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic gold medallist in 1996. “The Games would be proud!”
Federer was one of the first leading tennis players to pledge support for his fellow racket sport: “I think it’s a wonderful sport. It’s unfortunate some sports don’t get the opportunity to be in the Olympics – I think squash would deserve it.”
Since then, fellow stars Agassi, Clijsters and Edberg have also given Squash their backing.
“I think Squash would be a great addition to the Olympic Games,” said Clijsters, one of the greatest ever players in the women’s game who won 41 WTA singles titles including four Grand Slams. “It’s a great competitive game and different from the other racket sports in not having a net dividing the players.
