Match Report 28th February 2024 v Hamilton (home) – West Squash Division 1
Not many matches left, and tonight Hamilton were the visitors…. and Hamilton are like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re gonna’ get!
Our team are either highly motivated or we’ve got nothing better to do with our time as we’re normally at the club early and have a brief warm up while we wait for our opponents. Ollie joined Chris and I on court (yes, I know Ollie and me on the same court! It was a bit of a squeeze!) and we basically just ran around retrieving the ball if Chris missed the nic!
Calum Philip turned up early this week and he was at No.2, so Chris (Murphy) and Calum were first on. A massive TAXI on the second point was Calum’s first mistake, as he didn’t get another point until ‘game ball’ in the 1st 🤣 (which was the ideal excuse for me to count the amount of ‘TAXIs’ for the rest of the match and stick them on the score sheet! …..there were 5 🚕! Little amuses the innocent 😇).
The 2nd and 3rd games were much closer, but Chris was on form tonight and ready to chase everything down, so he was pretty much impossible to stop – I obviously take full credit for the exceptional quality of the warmup 😊. Oh yes, and a massive TAXI on match ball to take the first 3 points for the team.
Next up was Hamish (Buchan-nan-nan-nan) at No.5 against Norman Patterson. Angus was missing this week (no commitment!) and so Hamish stepped up as not only the new No.5, but also to take Angus’s place as the guy who always beats Chris at darts 🎯. Many people have underestimated Norman before, so I was keen to make sure Hamish didn’t fall into that trap. To be fair Hamish was flying tonight so I don’t think he needed the warning; Norman’s best game was the 2nd when he got 4 points, so it tells you how relentless Hamish was. Another 3 points to the cause!
‘2 James Sings’ (good to see Cammy used James’ full title on the scoresheet tonight! 😂) was up next against Joe Broadley at No.1. Their corresponding match in the first half went on for ages (in fact it was much longer that that!) so I thought I’d come back in about an hour and catch the 2nd game! However, maybe it was home advantage or maybe it was the tough games he’s been up against in the past month, but James was at his attacking best tonight. He really had Joe moving at full tilt and dominating most of the points. The first was 11-3 and the second 11-5 and James dominated both – mind you he was 2-0 up last half as well, so I fully expected Joe to get back into the match and at 6-4 up, it looked like that was exactly what was going to happen. Then, as if by magic, James Singh appeared (🎩) and won the next 5 points which gave him back the momentum to take the game and the match 3-0 and not to mention the small matter of the 3 extra team points. Great display from the self-titled Singh Shadey!🎤
There was confusion next as the Hamilton No.4 had to call off as he was ill, so I decided to let Kiwi-Cammy play the match against Chris McGeady (and I would play Tigger when he’d recovered). Well, this was a very entertaining match to watch as it was ‘disco time’ on court with Cammy running about like a demented spaniel and causing all sorts of havoc! Chris must have wondered what the hell was going on – and we were all thoroughly entertained by Cammy’s retrieving, the dives and the bizarre movement (in fact as Flash was missing because of a chainsaw injury🪚…. maybe Cammy was doing an impression of Flash!💡Don’t worry, everyone, Flash’s injury is but a flesh-wound and he’ll soon be back on court 🤕).
Anyway, the upshot of all this hilarity was that Chris had to cope with all sorts of angles and lightning retrieval, but Chris is no stranger to fast retrieval and so he was mainly in control of the match. At 7-5 up in the 2nd Cammy had half a chance, but that was as close as he got, and Chris brought the tie home 3-0.
So a team victory tonight and MOTM to James I’d say (despite disco time) and MOTM to Chris McG for the Accies 👍 – and it was straight to the Back Bar for footie and burgers for dinner (both sides of Glasgow were happy with the footie results ………and annoyed at the same time! ⚽ – and I was delighted with the Liverpool result!). Hamish’s position in the 1st team took a battering as he lost to Chris at darts – which is just embarrassing! 🤣 Another great Wednesday – we’ll miss it in a few weeks 🏁
Happy 29th of Feb everyone!
Match Report 21st February 2024 v Newlands (away) – West Squash Division 1
Sorry for the late match report this week, but even I have to work sometimes!
Last Wednesday saw us visiting top of the table Newlands, for the big match of the half against the champs. We lost 4-1 in the 1st half, but the lads are firing at the moment, so could we do better?
I was on first this week, against Victoria Bell, up from Carlisle. I’ve never beaten Vicky, so I was surprised that in-between the games the lads were quite optimistic that I could turn things around (maybe they were just trying to get me going!). The truth, however, was that she was just too good for me (and 10 other players in Division 1 as well – often playing at No.2 or 3! Right Flash!!). Her trademark volleying was as tight as ever and she hits a straight length like a pro, anyway, as I said too good for a hacker like me – 3-0 to Vicky.
Next on was Flash-Harry (Anderson) v Mark Ford. This was looking like another tough one for Flash against an extremely tough competitor. However, Flash had a great start and he had Mark twisting and turning from the start with his eclectic array of shots (including a reverse boast that almost went out!). Anyway, it was a tight 1st game, but The Flashman pinched it and was looking back to his best. After the first point in the 2nd game, Mark started limping and it was soon clear that this would be the end of his night as he retired a couple of points later. Harry said he’d rather lose in 5 than have a retirement, but I’d take the win anytime! (especially against Mark). Having said that, I’m not sure I’d be fast enough to cause Mark to injure himself! So, 3 points to the cause.
Next up was Angus (Forster) v Carrie Hallam at No.5. Now Carrie had beaten Angus 3-0 in the first half so it would be some turnaround for Angus to win this one. It was a very tight 1st game and Carrie narrowly won, but it was obvious that this was going to be a much closer affair that the last half. Angus won the 2nd with some great retrieval and Carrie had to dig deep to win the 3rd! This was a really tough physical battle with both players flying about the court. Angus won the 4th, and it looked like Carrie didn’t have much gas left in the tank – but after the break, she came right back at Angus and was winning when, for the second time tonight, a player pulled up lame. Unfortunately for us, Angus slipped and strained his calf, so was unable to carry on. A well-deserved 3-2 win for Carrie and a great match to watch.
Next on were the No.1s, as ‘2-James Singhs’ took on Matt Bedwell. Now Matt is probably playing the best he ever has this season and has had some great wins along the way, so another really tough one for James. This was also a tough physical battle, and the rallies were hard with Matt putting a lot of pace and pressure on the ball and James defending well; having said that neither of the two looked particularly out of breath, which is amazing given the length and pace of the rallies! Matt, however, kept himself in the box-seat most of the time, as James was always playing catch up. Matt won the 1st game and kept control in the 2nd game as well. Matt never looks particularly annoyed about anything at the best of times, but when Mark gave a controversial call at the end of the 2nd game, Matt just paused and then showed his displeasure by hitting two cross-court volleys into the nic to win the next two points! Mark said, ‘I thought that would get him going!’ 🤣🤣
The pressure was ramped up even more in the last game and James knew he’d been up against it by the end of the match – good performances by both Matt and 2-James.
Last up tonight and playing the best I’ve seen him in a string of his most recent matches, was Chris (Murphy) against Fraser McCann. Fraser had won a tough 3-2 against Chris in the first half, so when he took the 1st game 12-10 it was looking like this could be another 5 setter! Chris then took control of the game and made Fraser do a lot of moving, but Fraser countered by moving really well and he made life tough for Chris! However, Chris grew into the match and was soon 2-1 up and looking in charge and always seemed to have an answer for whatever was thrown at him. So a tough run out for both men, but equally a good match to watch and a 3-1 win for us.
Players of the match were definitely Carry and Angus for that great match – and with a bit more luck Angus could have sneaked that one and won the match, but it wasn’t to be and Newlands won 3-2 (8 points to us though!).
So pizza/chips/poppadoms/pakora and spiced onions for dinner to top off another great Wednesday night oot. Needles to say we arrived at the Whitecraigs Back Bar later for second suppers for the lads and then Chris was off for a couple of hours sleep and then off to Berlin – top commitment!
West Junior Leagues – Match Day 3 at Whitecraigs LT&SC as Western 1 & 2 came to Compete Against the Whitecraigs Tigers

Match Report 7th February 2024 v Giffnock (home) – West Squash Division 1
Giffnock were No.2 in the league and we were No.3 before last night, so could we upset the rankings?
We had numbers 1, 2, 3 & 4 ready and raring to go and the Giffnock No.5 was there! Anyway, eventually the No.2s were the first match up so Chris (Murphy) was first on against Owen Hadden. It looked on paper that Chris was going to win this easily, but after the 1st game Owen was motoring around and at 8-5 up I was thinking’ ‘it’s a bit dangerous to let Owen within 3 points of the finish line!’. The 2nd couldn’t have been closer at 10-10, but Chris dug deep to clinch this one. The 3rd was almost as close 11-9, but in the end Chris got through unscathed to win 3-0.
I was on next against Ben Mazzucco and I haven’t done too well against him in team matches recently, but I’m playing OK at the moment so there’s always a chance! The chance came when I won the 1st, however after this Ben got into 2nd gear (!) and although I got close, he was always just a little too fast and his reactions were a little too quick. So in the end I should be happy with a point ………but I’m not!
The No.1s went on next as ‘2 James Singhs’ faced up against another full-time pro-player in Martin Ross (James must be sick of the sight of them!). Martin was on good form and raced to a 2-0 lead, although the rallies were exhaustive and the retrieving was fantastic. James’ best spell of the match was in the 3rd game when he was 6-4 up and was really going forward on the volley well. However just at that moment disaster ensued as James slipped and was flat out on the canvas. It looked like a bad one, but a few minutes later the gladiator had regained his composure and was tentatively ready to go again. I got the towel out to wipe the floor, only to hear the Mrs say, “What’s going on here, he never does that at home!” (bloody cheek! I put some dishes near the dishwasher just the other day!). Anyway back to James and Martin – unfortunately for us Martin took no pity on James’ fall and managed to wrap up the tie 3-0.
We would need to win both of the last two ties to take the match! Queue the No.5 match as Angus (Forster) was ready to play Niall Morris (which was a repeat of the first half match and Angus’ first ever team match for The Craigs – great Bosman!). Well, if the 1st game was anything to go by (14-12 to Angus) this was going to be a cracker! I took to writing D.S. – which is Angus’ catchphrase and means DogSh*** – on the score sheet anytime Angus hit a horrendous ‘tin’ and I was delighted to tell him I’d written it 5 times in the 1st game! Made no difference as Niall was soon 5-0 up in the 2nd and another D.S. went on the score sheet as Niall took the 2nd game 11-4. So I told our ‘in-between the games mastermind’ to have a word and whatever Chris said worked a treat as Angus played much better after that and went on to win the tie 3-1.
So 2-2 in the match and last up was Harry (Flash Anderson) v Neil Bennet at No.3. Well what an atmosphere this created and what a match-up. Both players traded games (with Neil winning the 1st and Flash the 2nd etc) as the crowd’s cheering got louder and louder. So to the 5th! Well at 0-8 down Harry looked dead and buried, but in a Flash it was suddenly 6-8 and the crowd were hoping for a miracle! Unfortunately it wasn’t to be tonight, although it wasn’t through lack of effort as Flash was ex-flashed by the end of the match. A great match to watch and Neil was too good in the end with a 3-2 win.
MOTM for Angus and Neil I’d say and burgers in the Back Bar for dinner and a great atmosphere for the rest of the evening! It’s what Wednesdays are all about!

Match Report 31st January 2024 v S.S.R.C.1 (home) – West Squash Division 1
We go again! SSRC 1 came calling tonight and they brought with them the PSA World Ranked 124th player, so this was going to be a tough one!
After coaching a young 10 year old lad, who is on his way to Aberdeen for the Scottish Nationals this weekend (watch out for the name Glyn in the coming years) and sweeping the courts I was ready to go.
Chris (Murphy) was first up tonigh as he was dying to get away to party with his mate who was away to Oz. I said bring hime to the Back Bar for a proper send off, but that was only the stand-by option! Anyway Chris played Dan Wearing at No.2 and this could have be a real tough one as Dan is an excellent player – just look at his recent results this season. However Murph is also playing well and has really hit his stride in January, I even caught him training this week (there will be a hefty punishment for that at the end of the season night oot!). Anyway, tonight Chris had two mates there to watch him, so he had some extra motivation and he used it to full effect as he reduced Dan’s chances with every shot and kept a really good player at arm’s length. So a magnificant 3-0 win to Chris (but no way am I giving him M.O.T.M. again).
Next up was Flash-Harry (Anderson) v Jessy Mills at No.3. This was a tough watch tonight as the mecurial FFFLLLLASH was right in it when he was 1-0 and also up in the 2nd, but unfortunately he just couldn’t hold on to take that game (I reckon if he had won the 2nd, he would have gone on to win the match!). These two players are rapid around the court and it was great to watch the physicality, however Jessy wrestled the game back and gained the confidence to go on and take the next two as well, and win the tie.
Angus (Forster) was on next at No.5 against Chris Holt and before they had even hit a ball, I thought Angus would have a great chance, as both men play similar, hard hitting games but Angus had 40+ years on Chris, so his extra pace and speed were surely going to make a difference, and so it proved. Chris wasn’t happy with the way he played tonight and he saved his best run of points for when he was match ball down, for an unlikely comeback! But Angus fell over the line and won the tie 3-0 with a good strong overall performance.
I was on next, and this tie was probably going to decided the match! I don’t mind this, as usually I’m playing someone with less experience than me, so it gives me a decent chance. So who was I playing tonight? ………… only Brian Robertson………….. the one person with more experience than me! Ho-hum, do your best even though things haven’t gone well against Brian for a while.
In the 1st game my serves were poor and Brian hit some great soft drops to keep me at arm’s length – 1 game down…….. watch out for his soft cross courts that are winning points every time he plays them – 2 games down….. and at 9-5 down in the 3rd, although I was still determined….. I also felt that maybe this match had passed me by.
However Angus was in my corner and his Churchillian motivation kept me going. Fortunately Brian put a few shots down, which helped me come back to take the 3rd – and Angus was in my ear from then on stratagising and motivating me (AND I changed rackets from my Harrow Vapor to my trusty Spark – must be the racket, couldn’t possibly be me!). I won a tight 4th game and after that I took control of the tie – and the crowd helped me across the finishing line in the 5th (especially when I got annoyed about a decision…… grow up you fool!). So I was delighted to turn this one around and bring home the extra 3 team points, being cheered on by Glyn, who was allowed to stay out late to watch the match!
So courtside for the last tie, as the P.S.A. ranked 124 in the world – Ali Prott – took centre stage. To say this was a tough one for James was a bit of an understatement! Having said that, James was up 6-4 in the 1st game and was looking very good. Unfortunately for us, Ali then ramped the pressure up 100% and won 18 of the next 22 points and was soon 2 games up, and well in control of the match. The 3rd game saw James really make it tough for the man who made his full Scottish debut in December at the WSF World Team Championships in New Zealand. However, ultimately Ali’s full-time training was just too much for James tonight and the power he has at his disposal, along with great length and good touch at the front made him a great player to watch as he took the tie 3-0 (and annoyingly he’s also a really nice guy!).
So into the Back Bar to see the last minutes of the Liverpool match, which I would have loved to see, but obviously, squash comes first! The spicy (veggie) chillie for dinner was excellent (the 2nd portion was even better!) and despite the fact that we were two men down for dinner, the SSRC boys made up for that and were a great bunch.
The team were delighted with the 13-8 win. A great team effort, as we wouldn’t have sneaked this one without all 5 of us playing our parts! (PS – is that January over already?)
