Match Report 11th October 2023 v Whitecraigs Rugby Club (away) – West Squash Division 1

Well that was an interesting night at the squash!

Away to Whitecraigs Rugby Club tonight and when we saw the line up, it looked like this could be a 3-2 either way….. and it was!

I arrived early and apparently my opponent had been warming up for 30 mins. So first up was me (Jason Broadberry) against David Simpson. Well, I knew that David was desperate to perform well tonight and so I made sure my preparation went well. I ate well and was well hydrated because I didn’t want to have any excuses. It was a strange game, however, with me winning the whole match 7 points to 6 in the first game!!?!?! I could give you a blow-by-blow account of it all, but I’m not sure that would achieve anything (and I’m not sure how to make it funny) so I won’t bother! (probably shouldn’t have discussed it with him later either as it just pissed Andrew off!)

At the same time as I was on court the No.2s – Chris (Murphy) v Allan McKay played their match. Unfortunately, I didn’t see this, but Chris won 3-0. However, he was looking a bit red around the gills after the final whistle. A good solid win against a good opponent in Allan, but Chris seems to have his mojo back and is talking about really stepping it up this season, which will be great to watch for the rest of the season.

We had 2 courts tonight so things were moving quickly with Flash Harry (Anderson) v Nairn McMaster on court 2. Well Nairn, by his own admission, wasn’t 100% match fit, so playing against his old mate Harry, was a tough one. Nairn still has the holds and flicks to worry all sorts of players, but Harry was just too quick tonight.

At the same time as this match Ollie (Millen) v Louisa Kaven were on a No.5. This was ultimately 3-0 to Louisa, but with a few more weeks/months training Ollie will be much closer. Louisa was the best tonight with some great short play mixed with reading the game well and so thoroughly deserve the 3 points.

Last up was ‘2 James Sings’ v Andrew Glen. Andrew has been great at squash for ages (he was great when he played with me, for DLWE, back in the day and he is still tearing it up!). James was always up against it, but he had success of his own when he kept in the really tough rallies – but ultimately, he couldn’t do it enough, so Andrew won the match 3-0 with great movement and attacking play.

Pizza and Guinness for dinner and then back to Whitecraigs LTC to watch the other club matches and have a cheeky double cheeseburger that was otherwise just going to waste! (no one seemed particularly surprised about the events of the night!)
