Scottish Juniors U19s Squad Finish on 20 Year High!

An excellent result for Scotland’s squad in Portugal at the 2012 Under 19 European Team Championships.

The No.11 seeds included Harrow’s Dougie Kempsell, Rosie Allan and Kirsty Lobban as well as Jamie Henderson and Chris Leiper; and they performed brilliantly in the ‘Pool C’ matches beating most impresssively Germany, but also Holland and Poland. These wins secured them a quater-final match against the Czech Republic which they also won 3-0.

The team then went on to play England in the semi-final, where unfortunately they narrowly lost 2-1 (to the eventual winners) but none the less they were the only team to take a tie from England.

In the 3rd/4th place play off match they eventually lost out to France 2-1, but to finish 4th, having been seeded 11th, was a massive achievement and the best result for almost 25 years (since 1988).

A special mention must got to Harrow’s Dougie Kempsell who won 7 out of 7 matches in the Tournament – a fabulous achievement.

Unfortunately Alan Clyne lost his game yesterday as went out to Tom Richards the No.6 seed in the British National Championships in Manchester.

Tom now goes onto play Nick Matthew in the Semi-final today and in the other half it looks like going with the seeding as James Wilstrop and Daryl Selby (the No.2 & 3 seeds) play their quarter finals tonight against Jonathan Kemp and Chris Ryder respectively, but you never know!

Premier Squash League (PSL) 2010

November 17, 2010 Leave a comment

Round 2 of the 2010 Premier Squash League (PSL) last night saw a shock 4-1 defeat for current champions ‘Surrey Health & Rackets’ at the hands of ‘Exeter Diamonds’.

Alan Clyne was playing for the Surrey side and lost a tight 4 set match to Jonathan Hartford 11-5 10-12 11-3 12-10

But neither side were able to top the B group (south) as ‘TWP St Georges Hill’ (led by PSA No.13 Daryl Selby and WISPA No.9 Laura Massaro) beat ‘UWE Bristol’ to clinch No.1 spot in the table by just 1 point to Exeter.

In group ‘A’ (north-ish) Esporta Oxford, led by Chris Ryder PSA No.36 and Madeline Perry WISPA No. 6,  top the group as they won 5-0 against Nottingham. However ‘Chappel Allerton’ went straight into 2nd= place (led by Alistair Walker PSA No.20 and Jenny Duncalf WISPA No.2) as they started their campaign off with a 5-0 win against Pontefract (who have Simon Parke, Lee Beachill and Vanessa Atkinson).

What a league that is! To see all Round 2 results chick here.

Harrow’s Alan Clyne Retires at Malaysian Open

Alan Clyne had to pull out injured in the second qualifying round at the $52K Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, due to an ankle injury that meant that he couldn’t lunge towards the ball  – AC quote “which is fairly important in squash!”

Alan tweeted that his ankle had been getting more and more sore each day he’d been away so it was immediately obvious that he would not be able to continue in his match against Australian Ryan Cuskelly (PSA No.#43) and he retired after just 7 minutes.

Alan’s quick retirement should help to minimise any long-term injury as he looks towards the Commonwealth Games in India later this year.

Harrow’s Alan Clyne Wins the 2010 PSA Kent Open

Alan Clyne picked up another title this weekend as he won the inaugural $10K PSA Kent Open in Maidstone.

Alan probably thought he would be facing No.#3 seed John Rooney in the final, but the Irishman had to pull out after a Chinese meal gave him food poisoning and this meant he had to concede the semi-final match to his opponent Jonny Hartford.

The final was dominated by Alan with a 3-0 victory in just 35 minutes. To see a full report of the match click here.

Alan Clyne in PSL Winning Team

Harrow’s Alan Clyne was part of the PSL (Premier Squash League’s) winning team last week as he beat Scott Handley in 5 games to take his team (Surrey H&R) to a 3-2 win against Esporta Oxford.

Alan, who is now at an all time high of No.62 in the PSA World Rankings, came from 7-10 (match point) down in the 5th against a very experienced opponent in Scott Handley and said afterwards that ”I though it was going to be tough, but I didn’t want it to be that tough!”.

Congratulations to Alan on another milestone in his career.

Harrow’s Peter O’Hara Wins The 2009/10 West Closed

Peter O’Hara (Newlands) won The 2009/10 West Closed Title at SSRC this weekend by beating Owen Hadden (Giffnock) in the final on Sunday. The match was 3-0 to Peter and although he always seemed to be in charge of proceedings Owen did make life tough for him by getting a couple of good leads in the individual games, especially the 2nd.

However when he was under pressure Pistol Pete always seemed to find another nic, which left Owen wondering what he had to do to keep the pressure on. Another impressive West Closed win for Peter and his 11th Title. (pic left Peter O’Harrow!!) To see all results click here

In the ‘B’ event Norman Patterson (Wishaw) came back from 2-0 down to beat Ashley Stevenson (David Lloyd West End) in an epic 5 games (results here) and Kieran O’Neill (Whitecraigs Rugby) won the ‘C’ event final 3-1 (results here) against Maggy Dick (from SSRC).
